Disney World Graveyard - Defunct Attractions

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Video

Based on Jules Vernes' classic science fiction novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was one of the original attractions at Disney's Magic Kingdom and opened on October 14, 1971, 11 days after the theme park's grand opening. Closed in 1994, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea has been partially replaced by a Disney character meet and greet area, as well as a Winnie the Pooh playground.

Cage: A progressive nightclub at Disney's Pleasure Island in the early '90s, Cage tended to attract a variety of increasingly un-Disney World-like punk-rocker types and was replaced by the safer 8TRAX, a dance club with that features '70s and '80s tunes.

Captain EO Video

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, this 3-D movie starred Michael Jackson and Anjelica Huston and ran from 1986 to 1994 at Epcot's Future World. Captain EO was soon replaced by Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, another 3-D film based upon the hit 1989 movie, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.

Diamond Horseshoe Revue: An entertaining live show at Frontierland in Disney's Magic Kingdom, the Diamond Horseshoe Revue mades its debut in 1971. The show went through a number of name changes such as Diamond Horseshoe Jamboree and Diamond Horseshoe Saloon Revue before closing altogether in 2003. It was replaced by Goofy's Country Dancin' Jamboree, which also has since closed.

Discovery Island Video

Originally known as Treasure Island, Discovery Island opened in 1974 as a nature preserve. Located in Disney World's Bay Lake, Discovery Island was closed to the public in 1999.

ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter Video

A state-of-the-art attraction Tomorrowland in Disney's Magic Kingdom, Alien Encounter closed in 2003 and was replaced by Stitch's Great Escape.

Flight to the Moon: This Tomorrowland attraction opened on Christmas Eve in 1971 and was hosted by Mr. Tom Morrow, believe it or not! Already dated, Flight to the Moon was reworked as Mission to Mars in 1975. Mission to Mars closed in 1993 and was replaced by ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter and then Stitch's Great Escape.

Horizons Video

One of Epcot's Future World attractions, Horizons made its debut in 1983 and offered guests a glimpse of technological developments in the future. The ride was torn down in 1999 and the site has since been replaced by MIssion: SPACE.

If You Had Wings Video

“If you had wings, you could do many things, you could widen your world, if you had wings . . .” Sponsored by Eastern Airlines, If You Had Wings was a unique ride in Tomorrowland that opened in 1972 and closed in 1987. Basically a colorful travelogue that transported guests to such destinations as Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City, If You Had Wings rarely drew a long line and provided the perfect locale for a little relief from Central Florida’s unbearable summer heat. After the ride unceremoniously closed, the site was later occupied by If You Could Fly (1987-89), Delta Dreamflight (1989-96), Disney’s Take Flight (1996-98) and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin (1998- ).

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride Video

Despite an intense show of support for this attraction, Disney World pulled the plug on Mr. Toad in 1998 in favor of a more commercially viable Fantasyland attraction - The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was one of the original attractions when Disney's Magic Kingdom first opened its doors in 1971.
